Community Engagement
"I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another."
John 13: 34
The Gospel calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and Jesus teaches that when we serve the "least of these" neighbors, we serve him.
We seek to love God by loving our neighbors in some of the following ways.

St. Benedict's Closet
A supply of emergency food and hygiene provisions for neighbors in need. See our current list of desired items.
IHELP

Caring for the vulnerable
The Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program (IHELP) is Tempe's only homeless lodging program. It offers job training, resume-building, and an opportunity for clients to save money while relying on the generosity of local faith communities to provide meals and housing. St. Augustine's provides a hot meal on the fourth Friday of every month and hosts IHELP in our parish hall on the first Sunday of the month.

Caring for our society
St. Augustine's works to fulfill our baptismal promise to seek and serve Christ in all people and to respect the dignity of every human being by membership in the Valley Interfaith Project (VIP), a broad-based community organizing effort that gathers local faith communities to build power in service of justice, compassion, and equity in Tempe and beyond.
We also partner with Corazón in efforts to provide civic training and election protections.
If you would like to be part of this vital ministry, please contact Mother Jana and we will get you plugged in.

St. Benedict's Closet

Caring for the hungry
St. Benedict's Closet is a food and hygiene pantry maintained by our parishioners to serve those who come to St. Augustines' looking for assistance.

Since the majority of our neighbors seeking help don't have a kitchen, the closet is stocked with non-perishable food. Cans should have pop tops so can openers aren't needed.
